Jiannan Wu was born in 1990 in Dalian China. Lives and works in New York City.
Wu began drawing and painting at the age of 7. His formal training began in 2009 when he studied at the Chinese Academy of Art in Hangzhou where he earned his Bachelor’s of Fine Art in 2014. He then moved to the United States to study at the New York Academy of Art and he completed his Master’s of Fine Art in 2016.
Working in both sculpture and drawing, Wu is interested in this relation between image and sculpture. His practice of two-dimensional drawing has greatly influenced his development as an artist working in three-dimension, most specifically in his interest in perspective in his sculptures. In addition, he draws on approaches of stage-set design and medieval high relief and also applies some techniques of traditional Chinese brick sculpture. Wu’s subjects tend to be observations of everyday life and their influences on our existence.
Wu is the winner of many significant competitions and awards. He is the winner of 2017 Dexter Jones Award, winner of MFA National Competition, and winner of Compleat Sculptor Award 2016. He was selected for Terra Foundation Residency in Giverny, France 2015 and ABC Stone Carrara Merit Award Residency in Italy 2016. His works have been exhibited internationally in New York, China and Europe.
